Halak starting over Price

Controversial!

via Dave Stubbs at Habs Inside/Out,
The Canadiens have announced that Jaroslav Halak will start in goal tonight in Game 4.

It will be the first career playoff start for the 22-year-old from Bratislava, who played 19 minutes in Monday's Game 3 in relief of Carey Price, stopping both shots he faced.

Halak played the vast majority of the season with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs, playing two periods in relief in Montreal on Dec. 8 and Jan. 12, then playing four games between March 8 and 29, winning two, losing one and losing once in overtime.

A Flyer Review

After knocking off a talented Washington Capitals team, the Philadelphia Flyers now head into tonights game with Montreal equipped with a 2-1 series lead. It's amazing to think that at this time a year ago they had just completed their worst season in franchise history. While some NHL franchises seem be stuck in a perpetual rebuilding mode the Flyers somehow were able to bypass the normal waiting period and have made a remarkably quick turnaround. We now look back at how they were able to do it.

Looking back last year the first vital moves were to remove the old guard and axe coach Ken Hitchcock in favor of a young coach in John Stevens who had a great AHL resume. The other move was to remove Bobby Clarke from the GM role in exchange for Paul Holmgren. Now when I first heard of this move I thought to myself what was the point of getting rid of Clarke if you're just going to replace him with his right hand man goon? If you've ever heard Holmgren talk in interviews he doesn't strike you as overly intelligent, he gives short terse answers and seems to get easily frustrated by difficult questions. Despite the impression I had I now have to give him plenty of credit, under his watch he has made a number of great moves to help put the team in the position they are in now.

Among the moves he has made:
  • Traded a broken down Peter Forsberg to Nashville for a bounty of picks and prospects
  • Brought in a quality starting goalie in Martin Biron (something Clarke was never able to do) for the relatively cheap price of a 2nd rounder.
  • Ignored plenty of trade offers and took a great prospect in James Van Riemsdyk in the 2007 draft
  • Traded a underachiever in Joni Pitkanen for a heart and soul gritty defenceman in Jason Smith as well as talented winger Joffrey Lupul who has rediscovered his scoring touch.
  • Got a heads up on the free agent market by trading for the rights of Kimmo Timmonen and Scott Hartnell and signed both to long term deals. Both players have played valuable roles this year.
  • In perhaps the biggest steal of all, traded an over the hill overpaid defenceman in Alexei Zhitnik for a young 6'5 defenceman who skates like the wind in Braydon Coburn. An absolute ripoff, Coburn has looked like a future all-star this year.
  • Caught one of the biggest free agent fishes in signing Daniel Briere.
  • Picked up Vaclav Prospal this year at the deadline for cheap. Has had as big an impact as any of the other more expensive deadline acquisitions.
Now Holmgren alone didn't pull off all these moves and Clarkes influence may still remain but Homers name is the one on top of the Flyer chain so kudos should definitely go to him as the Flyers soldier on this spring.

Seen Stamkos?

For whatever reason there has been speculation out there that the Tampa Bay Lightning may consider moving their no.1 pick overall in the upcoming draft. Well lets just put those silly rumors away by checking out the new site recently created by Lightning marketing department.

At www.seenstamkos.com you can check out the bio of Steve Stamkos complete with video clips and various quotes (including ones by Tbay center Vinny Lecavalier and former GM Phil Esposito). It's kind of funny to see Tbay jump the gun and pimp out a player two months before he has even become their property.

All World Detroit

Great game last night with the Red Wings taking a 3-0 lead now over the Avalanche. With word now that Paul Stastny is out with a knee injury you may as well stick a fork in the Avs, they are all but done. For a taste of the magic pairing of Zetterberg/Datsyuk forward to 3:30 of the youtube clip.

Avery done

...well at least he can get started on that Vogue internship now

NEW YORK - New York Rangers forward Sean Avery has been hospitalized after lacerating his spleen during a playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In a statement Wednesday, the team said the noted agitator was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center after New York’s 5-3 loss Tuesday night and was admitted following a CT scan.

Avery, whose spleen was not removed and isn’t expected to need surgery, likely will be hospitalized for a few days, team spokesman John Rosasco said.

Playoff News & Notes

  • The Sharks go in to Dallas tonight down 2-0 and have shown to be quite frustrated at trying to stop a 3 headed monster up the middle in Mike Ribeiro, Brad Richards and Mike Modano. Joe Thornton has played well but can only do so much. If Patrick Marleau isn't going to show up soon then the Sharks are in big trouble. With more great news for the Sharks look for Sergei Zubov to get a lot more ice time. In his limited amount of time in Game 3 Zubov made the pass of the series with a behind the back pass to Modano for a beauty. He also showed his ability to control the play and create space for others like only he can.
  • The Avs down 2-0 return home to face the Wings but things are not looking to good as rumor has it Ryan Smyth may be out with a broken foot. The Avs have already had to deal with ailments for Scott Hannan, and Peter Forsberg (who both may or may not play tonight) and Wojtek Wolski as well as a flu ridden Jose Theodore. Hot Wing Johan Franzen has emerged as one of the hottest players in the league with 7 goals in the playoffs but don't be too surprised. He potted 22 in 25 games down the stretch in the regular season.
  • And last but not least we have the Rangers back home at MSG tonight to try and stop the red hot Pens winning streak of 6 games. Tom Renney pulls out a couple desperation moves putting Brendan Shanahan on the 4th line and moving Petr Prucha up to gain a bit more speed up front. Paul Mara and his heavy shot will see a lot more time on the PP as well. I'll go out on a limb and say the Rangers will win tonight. This is a star studded lineup with the likes of Lundqvist, Jagr and Gomez. Being back home will jack them up for a strong performance.

The Hart Trophy

Alexander Ovechkin was named a finalist for the Hart Trophy given out to the NHL's most valuable player. Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin and Calgary's Jarome Iginla were also nominated for the prestigious award. Pundits believe that Ovechkin is a shoe-in for the award after he collected 65 goals and 112 points in 82 games. Malkin registered 106 points in only his second season in the NHL while Iginla had 50 goals and 98 points.

Easy call here, Ovechkin this year showed a lot of heart which will translate into winning a Hart.

The Mighty Quinn

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The 65-year-old Quinn, who led Team Canada to gold at the U18 world championships earlier this month in Russia, told the Sun yesterday he’s healthy, happy and “not ready to retire.”

“I’m on the record as saying if there’s an opportunity, I would welcome the chance to coach in the NHL again,” said Quinn, whose last NHL coaching stint ended after the 2005-’06 season, when he was fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs. “I’m not ready to retire. I still feel good. My health is good and if there’s an opportunity I’m not going to pass it up.

“I’m not sure what’s happening in Ottawa and I haven’t had any discussions with anybody there. I do know they’ve got a strong team there and a talented group. I know the people there and I know how hard they’ve worked and what a great job they’ve done. I’ve never been the type of person to go canvassing for a job, that might have to be something I consider.

Colin Campbell: New Leafs GM?

Straight out of the rumor oven.

from Duffer’s Dabbles at the Windsor Star,

A prominent National Hockey League source insists that the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs will be Colin Campbell, currently the senior executive vice-president and director of hockey operations for the league and the man who metes out discipline to miscreant players. Campbell, a former player and assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings who was coach of the New York Rangers from 1994-97, has no previous experience as an NHL GM. If Campbell is the man, look for ex-Leafs coach Mike Murphy to be promoted from his role as senior vice-president of hockey operations (Toronto) to replace Campbell at the league’s head offices in New York.

Vladimir Konstantinov Trial Begins

...and I thought it was the Russian mobs fault all this time.

from Francis X. Donnelly of the Detroit News,

He was Vlad the Impaler, a ferocious Red Wing known for flattening foes with bone-jarring hits on the open ice.

Now the 41-year-old can’t even take care of himself, slowly shuffling about his Metro Detroit condo with a walker.

It’s been 11 years since a limousine wreck turned Vladdy Konstantinov’s world upside down, a decade full of lawsuits and mental and physical rehab.

The legal maneuvering resumes today in U.S. District Court with the start of a trial that will try to ascribe blame for the injuries with the Ford dealership that sold the vehicle

Forsberg to play

*sounds like Foppa will play. With Colorado down 2-0 I think they would wheel him out on a stretcher at this point.

Update from Centennial, Colorado, where the Avalanche just finished up practice: Peter Forsberg is a definite maybe for Game 3.

Forsberg, sidelined by a groin injury, skated on a line with Joe Sakic and Andrew Brunette.

Asked Monday if he was ready to go, Forsberg said “we’ll see tomorrow,” but added that he “felt great.”

Joel Quenneville said Forsberg “looked good,” in practice.

Quenneville also said Jose Theodore will start Game 3. Theodore, who battled flu last week, was pulled in both Games 1 and 2 after each time allowing four goals. Theodore said he felt much better Monday.

As for shut-down defenseman Scott Hannan, who missed Game 2, Quenneville said Hannan has a foot injury and is questionable for Game 3. The Wings lead the Western Conference semifinal, 2-0.

A McKenzie Moment...

Bob Mac is one of the more knowledgeable hockey men around on the media side of things. I would take watching him over Don Cherry any day of the week. With that said I will now be posting his columns here at the Zoo on a regular basis.... enjoy!

Bob McKenzie

Starting the playoffs with six straight wins like the Penguins have done is impressive.

And coming back from a 3-0 deficit in Game 1 against the New York Rangers, winning with some of the standard offensive ability we're used to seeing from the Penguins was impressive, too.

But none of that is as impressive as what they did in Game 2 which is win what was essentially a 1-0 hockey game, until the empty-net goal made it 2-0.

Brunnstrom in Boston?

For Fabian Brunnstrom the rumored list of teams grows as the Boston Bruins have now thrown their hat in the ring to sign him. You would have to think with more teams getting involved the price has to be driving up for him. The real question is whether he is really worth it, or is this simply the hype machine getting out of hand?

Monday Morning Buzz

The main topic of conversation in the world of the NHL is the shot Tom Kostopolous gave Kimmo Timmonen on saturdays game. Say what you want about it being a cheap shot but Kimmo had to know something was coming after smirking at the Montreal bench after the goal. That's just classless.

Check out the punch on this youtube video complete with multiple replays at the end.

Quick Update: Avs/Wings

Currently 3-0 Wings over the Avalanche in the second period. Is there a hotter player going right now than Johan Franzen? 2 goals so far to add to his tally. He is really displaying a deft touch around the net. How is it the Red Wings keep finding these Euro gems despite never having high picks? Never mind Datsyuk and Zetterberg, it's guys like Franzen, Hudler, Fippula, and Kronwall (stud) doing the damage in this series. Ken Holland, Jim Nill and the rest of the Wings staff are as good as it gets for finding quality players.

*UPDATE- Not to be outdone Henrick Zetterberg makes it 4-0 with a beautiful goal.

Changes a'coming in Cowtown

CALGARY — The Calgary Flames filed out the doors of the Pengrowth Saddledome on Friday and some of them for the last time.

The backbone of the team - captain Jarome Iginla, goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff and defencemen Dion Phaneuf and Robyn Regehr - are all under long-term contracts for the next five seasons and Kiprusoff and Phaneuf another year beyond that.

A veteran team with a veteran coach was expected to do better than finishing seventh in the Western Conference and losing in the first round of playoffs, even though it was a hard-fought, seven-game series with San Jose.Changes are in the offing for Calgary's supporting cast.

Mike Gillis: Moneypuck

Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun sat down with Mike Gillis yesterday:

As Gillis talked Friday about management models, it wasn’t Sam Pollack or Bill Torrey or Glen Sather or Brian Burke he cited, but Sandy Alderson.

Alderson is the former U.S. marine who had no baseball management experience when he was named general manager of the Oakland Athletics in 1982. His hiring was ridiculed by many in the baseball establishment, but Alderson revolutionized the game.

He relied on data and detached analysis rather than experience and emotion to choose players and build his team, which became the best in baseball. His successor Billy Beane, a disciple, introduced the concept of “Moneyball,”

Crazy Stat Line of the Day

AHL related, but deserves recognition.

Michael Leighton made 98 saves on 101 shots for Albany in a 3-2 5OT loss (longest game in AHL history) to Philadelphia. Wow!

No Vigneault No Cry

Markus Naslund is recovering after elbow surgery to remove loose bone chips Thursday. It's unclear how long the problem had been bothering the pending unrestricted free agent.

He went to Hawaii following the season before having the surgery.

One report has suggested Naslund won't return to Vancouver if coach Alain Vigneault comes back. New GM Mike Gillis, who used to be Naslund's agent, said Thursday he hasn't discussed the issue with Naslund. "He'll make a decision in the next little bit but I haven't heard that coming from him," Gillis said of the report.

Kolzig No More

Picked up this blurb from the Washington post. Kolzig is one of those rare athletes (and even rarer for a goalie) that stayed his whole career with one team. Sounds like he may have to close out his career elsewhere if he doesn't retire now.

Kolzig Removes Nameplate

Goaltender Olie Kolzig removed his nameplate from his locker here at Verizon Center after tonight's 3-2 overtime loss to Philly. Kolzig declined to speak to reporters, but that gesture seems to say it all about his future with the organization.

Random Trivia: Sharks and Stars

(1) Sharks captain Patrick Marleau grew up in Aneroid, Saskatchewan; most media guides list this as his birthplace too. One problem: Aneroid doesn't have any hospitals. He was born in Swift Current (so was former marginal MLB player Reggie Cleveland!)

(2) The Dallas Stars fight song, which is played coming out of every intermission, was recorded by Pantera. Apparently they're from Dallas!

(3) Joe Thornton once got in an altercation at "Burty Bob's Two" tavern in Ontario. This weekend, a band called "Punch The Floor And Step Twice" (sage life advice) is playing there. Awesome.

(4) On the Stars website, you can download songs straight from certain players' I-Tunes. Mike Modano has some Willa Ford on there (obvious), but also some Don Henley (daring).

(5) The Sharks mascot, S.J. Sharkie, has his own website and apparently, delivers pizza to local businesses during weekdays as part of a team promotion. Man, we'd love to get pizza from a guy dressed in a shark suit. Does this mean we have to move west?

(6) A few weeks after the first event at American Airlines Center in Dallas, it was found that the glass installed in the bathrooms was not the same as what was originally intended. Apparently, people had a clear view into the restrooms (YOW-ZA!) The glass was changed immediately.

(7) When Evgeni Nabokov was selected late in the 9th round by the Sharks, they had NEVER seen him play; rather, they based their selection of him on the skills of his father, a goaltender who played for 18 years in his native Kazakhstan.

Fantasy Talk: Top Prospects

If you're a lover of hockey pools (especially dynasty ones) it's never to early to start tracking down the next wave of prospects. THN's 50 top prospect list came out last month and I thought I'd post it up here for you to view.

Always a handy list to have with you come draft day. In past years I've been able to draft the likes of Mike Richards, Ryan Getzlaf, and PM Bouchard with a bit of swaying thanks to past top 50 ranking lists.

Keep in mind these are players that have already drafted by NHL teams and if you're wondering why Carey Price is no.1 it is because he had been sent down to the minors earlier this year while they compiled this list. Really he should be graduated.

Big Jags talks more Pittsburgh

An interesting article with Jaromir Jagr opening up about his departure from Pittsburgh.

Globe and Mail

PITTSBURGH — If you are shooting the return of Jaromir Jagr to Pittsburgh for his first NHL playoff appearance since he left the Penguins in 2001, forget any soft-focus shots or sepia tones or the violins.

In the eyes of the Penguins fans, this is not the return of the prodigal son. There will be no fatted calf, no celebrations. Jagr will be booed every time he touches the puck for the New York Rangers just as he has every time he played at the Mellon Arena since he demanded and was granted a trade at the end of the 2000-01 season.

Pittsburgh fans have long memories. They remember his lament during that final season that he was "dying alive" in Pittsburgh and they still seethe.

Strange Days

Excellent game tonight as the Red Wings throw the first blow and take game 1 vs the Avalanche. The Red Wings built up a huge 4-0 lead before the Avalanche gallantly fought back and had almost tied up the game but was thwarted by humongous save by Chris Osgood.

Bad luck swept over the Avs today as Peter Forberg was out with a groin injury and Wojtek Wolski left the game early due to an upper body injury. Jose Theodore was also pulled and mysteriously sent to the hospital for sickness. I guess I would be sick after letting in 4 goals in less then a period and a half. I've already heard speculation that perhaps Theo was irate about being pulled and simply left. Nothing substantial to that though as that would make for a HUGE lack of character on Theodores part.

Can't wait for Game 2!!

*Montreal won game 1 vs Philadelphia 4-3 with Tom Kostopolous scoring a huge OT winner. Alex Kovalev potted 2.

A Colorado/Detroit review

Find Dino Ciccarelli and ask him if he still can't believe he shook Claude Lemeiux's freakin' hand!

Or, heck, plug "Red Wings Avalanche rivalry" into the search engine and get 68,900 entries -- with the March 26, 1997 brawl right on top.

Never mind that a lot of that doesn't mean diddly -- or Google -- to many of the current members of the Colorado and Detroit rosters.

Not in Marios league...yet

April 24, 2008 --

Trust the guy who once rode shotgun: Nobody Jaromir Jagr has ever seen drove like Mario Lemieux.

"With all due respect for [Sidney] Crosby and [Evgeni] Malkin, I don't think they are Mario Lemieux," said Jagr, preparing to go to Pittsburgh, his first NHL home, for tomorrow's night second-round opener between the Rangers and Penguins.

"I say that with all due respect because the game has changed.

Burke stays put

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Toronto Maple Leafs will have to look elsewhere for their new general manager.

Brian Burke put widespread rumours regarding his future to rest Wednesday, announcing he will remain with the Anaheim Ducks through at least the 2008-09 season. Burke's four-year contract with the Ducks expires in 2009, and he and the team will continue working on a contract extension.

Dogs of the 1st round

Come playoff time when the level of play is raised it's always interesting to see which players rise to the occasion and which ones fall. Here are some of the players who couldn't take the heat in Round 1.

Marian Gaborik 6gp 1pt -3 This years poster boy for a playoff bust. His slump spelled the end for the Wild.

Todd Bertuzzi 6gp 2pts -2 Overpaid shlub is a playoff non-factor for the 2nd year in a row. also hurt the Ducks with his undisciplined play.

Paul Stastny 6gp 1pt -2 Looked like a scared rookie against the Wild. Now come the Red Wings...

Andrei Markov 6gp 1pt -1
Usually a very steady performer. Word now that he has been playing hurt which would explain his lack of production.

Dany Heatley/Jason Spezza combined 8gp 2pts -9
Big duos playoff disappearance cost the Sens the series

Brian Campbell 7gp 3pts -1 Played physically soft, caught chasing the puck on many occasions. Now has a new series to turn his play around.

Canucks Report 23/04/08

The rumors are true! The Vancouver Canucks today will announce the signing of super agent Mike Gillis to become the teams new general manager. He comes with zero experience in managing a team but does come with a wealth of hockey knowledge. A little background on Gillis:

- Played 6 years in the NHL before retiring due to a knee injury.
- Has a law degree from Queens university.
- Successfully sued his former agent Alan Eagleson after discovering Eagleson had illegally collected a portion of his injury settlement from the NHL.
- Had a huge stable of players as an agent including former Canucks Geoff and Russ Courtnall, Pavel Bure, and current Canuck Markus Naslund.
- Pulled himself out of previous GM job offerings including an offer from the Canucks before they had decided to go with Brian Burke.

Already many a fan in the Canuck nation are denouncing this hiring citing his lack of managerial experience but a look at history shows one very successful case of a former agent turned GM in Pierre Lacroix. During his time with the Colorado Avalanche Lacroix won two cups and drafted exceptionally well despite never having high picks. Another former agent/GM Mike Barnett did not have as successful a tenure in Phoenix signing many over the hill vets and trading away Daniel Briere but he did lay a foundation stocking the team with prospects that are starting to bear fruit now.

As Gillis was only hired 9 days after the Nonis firing it doesn't seem as though the Aquillinis made a very exhaustive search for a GM and that Gillis had been there man all along. In any case with Gillis firmly in place now he can begin to familiarize himself with the scouting staff (or bring in his own people) and get himself ready for the entry draft in June. This is a very important draft for the Canucks as they own the 10th overall pick in what is considered a very strong draft year. Gillis will also have to make a decision on whether incumbent coach Alain Vigneault will be the man for him as the team moves forward.

The Calder

It was another great year for rookies in the NHL and 3 standouts emerged today as nominees for this years Calder Trophy. Two Blackhawks in Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews as well as Washington Capital Nicklas Backstrom.

Look for Kane to take the award this year as his stats are slightly better then Backstroms while Toews candidacy is hurt by the fact he missed a good chunk of games due to injury.

Sharks advance

Boy do I know how to pick them! The San Jose Sharks easily beat the Calgary Flames 5-3 to close out a series win. Great game by the old horse Jeremy Roenick with 4 pts. Think he's glad he decided to un-retire?

Next up for the Sharks... the Dallas Stars. Should be a fierce battle.

boooooo!

Flyers just won game seven 3-2 in overtime. What crap though, that ref was letting everything under the sun go and then he calls a bit of a cheesy one. Robbed of a great showdown between Sid and the Pens and Ovechkin and the Caps. BOOOOOOO

The Rumor Mill

Rumblings are being heard that agent Mike Gillis is all but signed to become the new General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks.

If this indeed turns out to be true, this creates an interesting conflict of interest with Gillis having been the agent of free agent and current captain of the Canucks Markus Naslund.

I for one do NOT want to see Naslund back. It's time for a change at captain.

Prediction Time

A couple huge game sevens go tonight as the Calgary Flames take on the Sharks in San Jose and the Philadelphia Flyers take on the Capitals in Washington.

My predictions for tonights games as follows...

Calgary over San Jose 3-2

The Sharks have been the heavy favorite throughout and they are at home so many will be taking the Sharks to win tonight I'm sure. While the Sharks have the look of a playoff built veteran team they are sill relatively inexperienced when it comes to the playoffs. On the other hand we have the flames who still have a core of the 2004 team the made the finals in Jarome Iginla, Mikka Kiprusoff, Robyn Regher, Marcus Nilson, and Craig Conroy. That year the Flames lost a close battle in the final game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and also had a win in game 7 versus the Canucks in Vancouver. This team has been through the trenches and I'll take their experience to win over the Sharks for tonight.

Washington over Philadelphia 5-3

The Flyers have now lost out on two valuable chances to close out the Capitals including game 6 at home with a 2-0 lead after the 1st period. They have now awoken a sleeping giant in Alexander Ovechkin to go along with Alex Semin who has been a monster this series. At home and with momentum on their side the Capitals will take this one with ease.

Hossa

It looks as though new Pen Marian Hossa is enjoying his time in Pittsburgh (and who wouldn't playing with Sid?). So much so that he's already talking about re-signing there. If Pittsburgh can figure out a way to fit him in under the cap and sign him to a long term deal we will be looking at the updated version of the 80's Oilers for years to come.

The Norris

The Norris trophy candidates were named today led again by Nicklas Lidstrom who records his ninth nomination in the past 10 years - he has won the award five times. He is up against Boston's Zdeno Chara and Calgary's Dion Phaneuf, who were named finalists on Tuesday.

This one will be no contest, Lidstrom led all defencemen in scoring with 10 goals and 60 assists and was second in the league in plus/minus with a +40.

The Fabian Files

The Ottawa Senators are a new player in the Fabian Brunnstrom sweepstakes.
Ottawa GM Bryan Murray spoke the highly touted prospect's agent, J.P. Barry, on Monday and will get back to him with a pitch to play in Canada's capital. It is believed that Brunnstrom wants to play among the top six forwards. Other suitors include the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs. Brunnstrom will be among the pre-season favorites for rookie-of-the-year next season.

Well it sounds now like the Vancouver Canucks are out of the running for this guy. While we've had conflicting reports on how good this guy really is, if he does turn out to be some kind of player then the Dave Nonis firing will forever go down in infamy.

2008 McGuire's All-Monster team

Hockey isn't all about stats (unless you're in a hockey pool). That's why I love Pierre Mcguire's all-monster team where instead of just the pure offensive players that get most of the accolades, we have players with a well rounded game being honored. CLICK HERE for the full team.

The life of Brian

Let the wooing of Brian Burke begin...

Hockey Columnist

We interrupt this regularly scheduled programming – otherwise known as the Stanley Cup playoffs – for the Maple Leafs' pursuit of Brian Burke.

It begins today. Officially, that is. Unless Gord Kirke has presented the MLSE board with an entirely different game plan, Burke has been the No.1 target of the Leafs since John Ferguson was fired in January and he's still the No.1 target.

This thing is now going to heat up quickly.

"It's going to go from 33 1/3 rpm to 45 rpm in a hurry," one source said.

Guess who wears the pants?

It was well documented last summer over the four year contract offer that was agreed upon and then nixed by Mikael Nylander and the Edmonton Oilers.

Of course there was another source at play with that decision by Mikael, one it which he had no control over. Read all about it by CLICKING HERE

GM Kevin Lowe who was outraged at the time should now be understandable at Mikaels decision as he was probably saved from a rolling pin to the side of the head. In the end it worked out as Nylander would have only taken away valuable ice time from rookies Sam Gagner and Andrew Cogliano.

The Departed

While we've covered the exit of the Ottawa Senators at some length we now have a quick look at the four other first round losers with a quick overview on their fast exits from the dance.

Minnesota Wild

What went wrong?
Although the Wild were the higher seed this team was in tough against a surging Colorado Avalanche team that had added the likes of Adam Foote and Peter Forsberg to their team at the deadline. You can point a lot of the blame squarely at star player Marian Gaborik who was only able to produce one measly assist in 6 games. Gaboriks scoring ability is vital to the Wilds success so with Adam Foote able to essentially erase Gaborik from this series they were all but done for. Also the injuries to the likes of Kurtis Foster and Nick Shultz were killers as replacements Sean Hill and Petteri Nummelin were simply horrible after a few games into the series. Goalie Niklas Backstrom was solid but was unable to match the spectacular goaltending that the Avs received with Jose Theodore.

Where do they go from here? This team has a solid nucleus with players like Gaborik, Mikko Koivu, and Brent Burns to build around so nothing too drastic needs to be done. Some of the dead weight will be shed, Hill and Nummelin and likely Keith Carney will be gone. Decisions will have to be made on bringing back the likes of Brian Rolston and Pavol Demitra who will be free agents. And coach Jacques Lemaire may not return as he has hinted at retirement. Although Lemaire is a hall of famer he is the only coach this franchise has ever known and it may be time for a fresh face to emerge.

Nashville Predators

What went wrong? They were simply outmatched. After winning games 3 and 4 to even up the series the Preds were unable to sustain any momentum and looked burnt out by the end. It didnt help that their best center in Jason Arnott received a concussion in game 4 when an over exuberant Alex Radulov nailed Arnott into the boards in celebration of a goal. And of course the bouncing center ice goal in game 6 on Dan Ellis by Nicklas Lidstrom didn't help either. Somewhere out there Dan Cloutier is having a bad fit of flashbacks.

Where do they go from here? After last years gutting of players the Predators will be content to stay put. There is solid nucleus of young players like Shea Weber, Radulov, Martin Erat, and goalie Dan Ellis among others. Also solid veterans JP Dumont and Jason Arnott are signed to multiyear deals. Things can only look up for this team.

Anaheim Ducks

What went wrong? Proving how hard it is to repeat as Stanley Cup champions the Ducks were fairly easily dispatched by the Dallas Stars. This team never really seemed to get on track this season. The Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermeyer retirements seemed to be a distraction till both finally decided to return late in the year. With less then a half year under their belts they never seemed to really find their groove. Big ticket items Mathieu Schneider and Todd Bertuzzi failed to impress as well this series. Corey Perry's goal scoring was missed early on. Center Doug Weight was a liability. With Ryan Getzlaf being the only viable scoring option up the middle former Ducks center Andy Mcdonald was missed more then ever.

Where do they go from here? For starters they will want quick decision by Selanne and Niedermeyer on returning for next year. There is no way they will go through another season with that type of distractions dogging them. They will also need to find a way to re-sign RFA Corey Perry before another team decides to try and steal him like the way Dustin Penner was taken from them last year. There's a good chance GM Brian Burke will be gone as well as he is expected to receive a massive contract offer courtesy of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

New Jersey Devils

Another higher seeded team that was quickly bounced. This teams lack of offensive depth was exposed against the stacked Ranger team. This team has a history of letting good players leave but this year after losing the likes of Brian Rafalski and Scott Gomez it was all a bit too much to overcome. Super pest Sean Avery really seemed to unnerve the team getting under their skins with various antics as well as scoring some big goals himself.

Where do they go from here? Martin Brodeur is in the later stage of his career so the team will still be wanting to compete in this small window they have for the Stanley Cup. To do that they will need to add some firepower up front. They have a group of good wingers but up the middle they are hurting. Danius Zubrus was a free agent bust and unless Travis Zajac takes a big step in development next year they will need to add a good offensive center via the free agent market. If they are willing to spend the money, names like Daymond Langkow, Pavol Demitra, and Patrick Marleau could all be interesting options.

The Vezina

The 3 finalists for the Vezina trophy were named today. Marty Brodeur of the NJ devils, Henrik Lundqvist of the NY Rangers, and Evgeni Nabakov of the SJ Sharks all cap off great years and will vie for this years goalie of the year award.

I will name my choice for winner in Henrik Lundqvist. In the 3 years of Henrik's career thus far he has been nominated for the Vezina in all of his 3 seasons, plus the rookie of the year award and has yet to pull down any hardware. I think this year is the time for him to finally get his due. All 3 of these guys have great numbers though so you couldn't really go wrong with either of them this year.

The Thrill is back

The Bruins clawed their way back into their series with Montreal with an exciting 5-4 victory saturday night. Boston is looking like the far better team these last couple games getting the bulk of the better scoring chances and simply outhustling the Habs.

If you're a Phil Kessel fan you're loving his performance last night scoring two great goals. One a lovely undressing of d-man Bouillon to score off the short side, and the second a one timer chip shot off a tough pass into the top right corner. Phil has had consistency problems his first few years in the league but he does seem to answer well to adversity. Last year he played some of his best hockey after returning from his bout with cancer and now this year he has been an offensive dynamo since his 3 game benching early in the series. Milan Lucic had another great game delivering 6 big hits along with his goal. I can't say it enough, this kid is a beast.

Monkey of the Month

To Sean Avery who's chimpanzee like antics keep us all entertained we here at the zoo would like to make you our monkey of the month.

His ability to not only score big goals, but to also get Martin Brodeur and the rest of the Devils off their games with his pest antics was very impressive. Equally impressive is his ability to give the middle finger with a glove on. Anyone thats ever worn a stiff hockey glove knows thats no easy task!

The Caps live to see another day

In another great game in whats been a very exciting series the Washington Capitals staved off an early playoff exit by beating the Flyers 3-2 this afternoon. Alex Ovechkin had plenty of great chances but was held off the scoresheet. The other members of the Capital russian contingent stepped up though as Sergei Federov had a nice game with a goal and assist while the other Alex, Semin that is, stole the show setting up a beauty by Nicklas Backstrom in the first and then scoring the game winner in the third. Now the Caps in a real test will head back to a hostile crowd in Philly to try and tie the series up.

In other action tonight Montreal will again try to close out their series against Boston. They have been having a hell of a time scoring goals (only 2 goals in the last 2 games). Carey Price can only do so much so they'll need the offense to get in gear. Help arrives with the apparent return of their captain Saku Koivu from injury. His playmaking has been sorely missed as wingers like Mike Ryder and Chris Higgins have been invisible without his presence.

Last we have Colorado also attempting to dust off the Minnesota Wild. Jose Theodore has been incredible and has really gotten into the heads of the Wild. Marian Gaborik will probably want to try an make an appearance here before its too late. Mired in a huge slump, Gabby is still looking for his first point of the series. **UPDATE Defenseman Nick Shultz who had an appendechtomy just 12 days ago pulls a Willis Reed and will return for tonights game. Great news for the Wild.

Canucks Report 18/04/08

-To start off we'll mention the latest churn of the rumor mill. Jason Spezza for Roberto Luongo which is now growing legs after being reported on sportsnet.ca.

How valid this rumor is anyones guess but I'm not sure how a Canucks team with no General Manager makes any type of deal now least of which a blockbuster of this magnitude.

-Also making the rumor mill are two new names being thrown into the hat of the GM search, which include a pair of player agents in Mike Gillis who represents such players as Markus Naslund, Sam Gagner among many. And Brian Lawton who was also a former player and infamous no.1 overall bust. Looking at two other former agents turned GM's we've had one very successful one in Pierre Lacroix who built a 2 time Stanley Cup winner in Colorado and at the other end of the spectrum we have Mike Barnett who was unable to lift a struggling Phoenix team out of its doldrums during his tenure.

- Hockeys Future just released their spring list of the top 20 Canucks Prospects. League wide we are currently ranked at 15th out of 30 teams. Defenceman Luc Bourdon heads the list which contain a variety of medium range prospects but no sure fire stars. Fired GM Dave Nonis had put a lot of faith in this group as the future of the Canucks and may have sacrificed his job in order to save them from becoming trade bait. Check out the whole list HERE

- Also one final note has the rumblings of Brian Burke being offered a 5 year 25 million deal to run the Toronto Maple Leafs once his Duck team get bounced from the playoffs (with presumably his buddy Nonis joining him as well). Burke is too big an elephant for the small pond in Anaheim. Aligning his star into the center of the universe in T.O would be the perfect fit.

ISS Top 10 Prospects

Here is the latest top 10 rankings by the International Scouting Services for the 2008 draft. No surprises at the top with Steve Stamkos still the undisputed no.1 ranked player. The Tampa Bay Lightning who hold the top pick couldn't be more lucky in my mind. They are not that far removed from winning a Stanley Cup and still have a good nucleus of players from that team including star center Vincent Lecavalier. Now they are blessed with the top propect of 2008 to add to their team. Don't expect to see them flounder at the bottom of the NHL for long, at the very least I will expect to see them back in the playoffs for next season.

1 Stamkos, Steven C 2/7/90 R 5.11.7 176 Sarnia OHL

So long Ray

Success in the NHL can be fleeting and to prove that statement you have to look no further then to Mr.Ray Emery. Last year he was on top of the world after a stanley cup run, fast forward a year later and his team no longer wants anything to do with him. His prospects around the NHL are not looking to bright either. He could of been had for literally nothing and not one team took a chance on him.

Unsung Playoff Heroes

While their star players are being checked into oblivion teams need help from some unlikely sources. Check HERE for a rundown of Rotoworlds list of surprise players who have stepped up to the table so far into the playoffs. You're laughing if you've picked up any of these guys in the late rounds of your playoff pool.

Why Dave Nonis was really fired

Rumblings are coming down now on the real reason why GM Dave Nonis was fired (per a source at TSN). It all has to do with a certain Dallas Star named Brad Richards. During the time around the trading deadline owner Aquillini and family let it be known that they would like the Canucks to go out and acquire Richards no matter the cost (think Alex Edler and Ryan Kesler). When the price was too steep for Nonis and he was unable to complete a deal the writing was on the wall. Not making the playoffs soon after made it all too easy for the family to give Nonis the royal boot out of town.

More and more the Aquillinis are starting to look like your classic case of the meddlesome owner.

*Also reported, it is looking like right hand man Steve Tambellini is the frontrunner to become the new GM.

Playoffs News & Notes 17/04/08

  • The New Jersey Devils were again victim to a great night by Scotty Gomez and the NY Rangers to put them now down in a huge 3-1 hole. GM Lou Lameriello is regarded as one of the best hockey men in the business and rightly so but his inability to recognize Scott Gomez as a franchise player and to sign him to a long term contract has hurt the team. Although his regular season stats have always been solid if not spectaculor its the way he consistently shines in the playoffs that makes him worth every penny. With Lamoriello rebuffings Gomez's earlier requests for a long term deal he instead decided to handcuff the teams cap space by throwing away money on burn outs like Vladimir Malakhov and Alex Mogilny making the chance for a Gomez signing next to impossible. In the end it looks as though the loss of Gomez will be the reason for a quick exit for the Devils while the Rangers reap the rewards.
  • With Detroit now letting the Nashville Predators back into their series its all too apparent Dominik Hasek needs to be put on the bench in favor of Chris Osgood. While it is often the popular theory that you need to ride one hot goalie for a cup run there is no rule in the playoff handbook that says that is required. Detroit for the better part of the year were very successful employing a split rotation for the pair which resulted in great numbers for both goalies (don't forget Osgood made the all-star team this year). In my opinion I would start Ozzie (who did not allow a goal in relief of Hasek last night) for the next game at the Joe and if successful, try and close the series with him in net. For the next series I would go right back with a rested Hasek to start. Don't forget both men are in the twilight years of their career and need days off at this stage.
  • For tonights action Montreal will be trying to close out their series with Boston. Washington and Anaheim (Corey Perry returns) will also be trying to tie up their series with Philly and Dallas respectively. Also we have Colorado against Minnesota and Calgary vs San Jose in an important tie breaking game 5. And just to tell you how important a game it really is check out this stat that was mentioned by writer Mike Russo who covers the Wild. "The game 5 winner of any series tied 2-2 in history has won 158 of a possible 196 series (80.6 percent)".

Good night and good luck to the Senators

From last years stanley cup finals appearance to the bitter 4 and out drubbing this year at the hand of the Penguins. Oh how the mighty have fallen. This team was simply a mess from the get go. Captain Alfreddsson was hurt and wasnt able to do much when he returned for the last 2 games. Jason Spezza played hurt and was ineffective, Dany Heatley and Wade Redden did nothing to justify their big tickets, and no one other player came to the forefront and stood out.

Assuming GM Brian Murray will return it will be a busy offseason of decisions for him. A few matter he will have to deal with:

  • Will he find a taker for Ray Emery? This guy was poison for the team and cost former coach John Paddock his job. A buyout may be the easiest solution.
  • Should he move Jason Spezza? With a new contract at an average of 7 million, is he a true superstar worthy of that money? His critics will tell you that he fails to show up for the big games and that he has a tough time staying healthy. He will have a no-trade clause kick in next year so now is the time to make a decision to move him. I heard a silly rumour on the radio involving him for Roberto Luongo. Take it with a grain of salt.
  • They will have a host of free agents with Wade Redden, Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman among them. I would guess that all of them will probably be gone so will they be active in the FA market or will they go with a youth movement? The cupboards not exactly full with prospects.
  • Look for a new coach to arrive as well. Brian Murray always intended to be the GM and only returned as coach when he had no other options. Pat Burns anyone?

Sinden Speaks!

Apparently Harry Sinden is still alive and not afraid to speak his mind. With the Bruins trailing 3-1 in their series with Montreal the old curdmugeon let loose his thoughts on captain Zdeno Chara while also expressing his dislike for Marc Savard and ex-bruin Joe Thornton.

It was humerous to see the look on coach Claude Juliens face as he had to field questions about Sindens comments at a press conference. Being a long time Bruin Sinden should know better then to try and rattle the current regime at such a precarious time for the team.

How to revive your career

Sergei Samsonov today signed a 3 year contract for what I think is a staggering amount for a guy who earlier looked as though he had one foot out the door of the NHL. He played very well though after being picked up off the waiver wire scrap heap by Carolina and obviously the Canes brass was impressed. GM Jim Rutherford even went as far as to say "signing Samsonov was our top priority this off-season". I guess their priority list was a bit short this year.

Details here on the signing:

THE CANADIAN PRESS

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes and forward Sergei Samsonov have agreed to terms on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Samsonov US$2.3 million next season, $2.5 million in 2009-10 and $2.8 million in 2010-11. The 29-year-old Russian had 36 points (14-22) in 61 games this season.

Top 5 Deadline acquisitions

Trade deadline day had a handful of big deals. Now that we've had some time to digest here is a compilation of the top 5 players that have made an impact with their new clubs.

1. Vaclav Prospal- Probably a surprise to you as my choice for no.1 but in terms of the relatively low price Philly payed to get him (Alex Picard and a conditional pick) and his production level (14pts in 18gs, 6pts in 3 playoff games) Prospal has been a great pickup. Credit him also with lighting a fire under Daniel Briere who had been criticized for his lackluster play up till the point of being paired with Prospal. Together they have been deadly on offense, especially in their playoff match so far against the Caps.

2. Brian Campbell- No Brainer choice here. Although the price was steep to get him he has proven to be worth the cost. He has come in and stabilized a weak back end for the Sharks while providing sorely missed production from the back end (19pt in 20 gms). Has been quiet so far in the playoffs but still has plenty of time to make his mark.

3. Cristibal Huet- It was apparent that with aging veteran Olaf Kolzig at the helm for the Washington Capitals goaltending was going to be an area that could endanger their playoff hopes. Insert Cristibal Huet who came in and played fantastic. The numbers dont lie as he posted an 11-2 record with a miniscule 1.63 gaa. His numbers have ballooned so far 3 games into the playoffs but the defence has been leaving him out to dry on many occasions. Honourable mention for the Caps goes to their pickups of Sergei Federov and Matt Cooke as both players played big hands into their playoff push as well.

4. Marian Hossa- The Penguins landed the biggest fish at the deadline when they landed Hossa. An early injury slowed Hossas intergration into the lineup but now well into the playoffs paired with Sidney Crosby he is paying off big (6pts in 3 gms). With Hossa in the lineup the Pens now sport two dominant lines that will be very, very tough to stop.

5. Adam Foote- With Colorado able to bring back one of their former leaders they addressed the weakest area of their team the defense. Foote can't be measured in terms of points but he has brought much needed toughness and has played well in the shutdown role going up against the oppositions best forwards. Aside from Foote the Avs made a nice move as well bringing in Ruslan Salei on the back end.

Notes on Nonis

As the fallout continues on the firing of Canucks GM Dave Nonis I'd like to mention the poll that sportsnet put forward in which they asked fans whether they thought the firing was a good move or not. 52% answered yes while 48% disagreed with the move. That is a good indication of how split this town is on the firing.

Great article in the globe and mail today with more on the Nonis firing, the warbling press conference by owner Aquillini, and the precarious situation regarding the Brunnstrom signing.

NHL Playoff News & Notes 15/04/08

  • The top 3 players missed by their teams this playoffs so far have been Corey Perry, Daniel Alfreddsson, and to a lesser degree Saku Koivu. On monday night we saw the return of Alfreddsson who was there to hopefully supply some offence and to give the team an emotional lift but it was all for naught. Alfy was able to generate a few chances but at the end of the night was unable to get on the scoresheet. With this series at 3-0 now for the Pens it is all but over for the Senators. Like I said before, it cant hurt to give Ray Emery a go here. By giving him a chance to boost his ego and not to mention silence his critics, he just might come in and give you some out of his mind hockey.
  • Game 4 between the Avs and Wild goes tonight and with it being the 2nd of a back to back game I really hope it doesn't lessen the quality of play or intensity. In my humble opinion this match-up round for round has been the best so far. The quality of hockey from the numerous chances, the quick puck movement, to the great saves has been top notch.
  • Aside from the Avs/Wild match we have the Boston/Montreal and the Calgary/San Jose series all at a 2-1. The pivotal game 4 outcome will make the series at a 3-1 hole or 2-2 tie so it is a huge swing game. I for one can't wait to fire up the HDTV... I don't think you can go wrong with either of these games tonight.

What are you looking for from your new GM?

"he has to have experience with hockey"

- Francesco Aquillini

Canucks Report 15/04/08

Here are the names being bandied about in the papers and airwaves for the new Canucks GM position. Who do you like? Some reasoning for each candidate:

Ken Holland- BC bred and a strong rep as one of the best GMs in the league. Could be moved out for Yzerman. Still unlikely but he would be a great choice IMO.

Brian Burke- Can you go home again? Has roots here plus a career for his wife. On the other hand he's already pissed they fired his best pal Nonis, plus the Aqullinis signed off on his firing here.

Pat Quinn- Sentimental pick.

Doug Armstrong- Built a strong team in Dallas. Fired for lack of playoff success.

Steve Tambellini- Safe pick, former player who's been with the organization for 20+years. Has the right italian last name too.

Jim Nill- If not Holland how about Nill his assistant? Gets credit for great late round draft picks.

Trevor Linden- If Garth Snow can do it why not Linden? NHLPA Prez experience can't hurt on his resume.

From an anonymous Canucks Fan

"The prime attribute the new GM of the 'Nucks must have is the ability to be a lap dog. The Aquilini's will prove to be classic meddlesome owners who will not allow the people they hire to do their jobs. They know condos, not hockey. We are witnessing the destruction of the Vancouver Canucks - first pick overall 2010 draft here they come. Marcus must be happy to not have to return to this mess."

Nonis no more

Shocking news of the night with Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis getting fired. New owner Francesco Aquillini obviously wants to bring in his own people but its suprising none the less. It's been a tough year for the Canucks but with the cap room available to play with I would of guessed he would of gotten one final chance to make amends. It sure seemed to be headed that way after Dave reportedly signed swede Fabian Brunnstrom. I hope this firing doesn't endanger that signing in any way.

Now on to the next question... will Alain Vigneault be next?

"I played like a little girl out there"

Well Tomas Plekanec for the sake of the legions of Habs fans and my playoff pool I hope you become a man soon enough.

More on the plight of the Plekanec can be read here!

Playoffs News & Notes 14/04/08

  • Wow what a game last night with the comeback win by Calgary over San Jose 4-3. Just less then 4 minutes into the game the Sharks stormed out for a 3-0 lead chasing the Kipper out of the game. The looks on the Calgary bench were of shock while coach Keenan wore the face of a disappointed father. The Sharks had managed to turn a stadium full of red clad frenzied fans into a house of eerie silence until defenceman Cory Sarich came and woke everyone out of their doldrums with probably the best hit of the playoffs thus far, catching Patrick Marleau with his head down and absolutely pasting him against the boards. With that hit and solid goaltending by backup Curtis Joseph who did not let in a goal the rest of the way the Flames mounted their comeback to a thrilling 4-3 win. Look for the Kipper back next game but he'll be on a short leash as Cujo has proven that the playoffs are his time of the year to shine. Regardless though of any potential goalie controversy this is not only a big win but a huge moral victory for the Flames as they have show they can overcome adversity with the best of them. The Sharks better put a bit more urgency and passion to their game before they dig themselves a hole they can't get out of.
  • Speaking of passion Joe Thornton was taking the heat from many fans and radio shows today for his seeming lack of it. I'm a big Joe fan and I say the criticism is a bit unwarranted. His game and body language on the ice has always been of a more introverted style, he relies on puck control and patience which gives him the time and space to set up his teamates for great chances which is his forte. With other players relying on frenetic play, big hits, and a lot of shots on net (i.e Iginla) his game doesn't seem to stand out as well in comparison although it may not be any less effective. He also isn't a rah rah type of guy out there which hurts him in the public eye as well. Down 2-1 in the series now Joe may have bring a little more to his game, we will see how he bounces back in game 4 against a upstart Flames squad.
  • Other teams getting their asses back into their series with the Bruins, Devils and Flyers all winning yesterday. It just goes to show with so many games in few nights its hard for any team to bring their A game to the table every night... the Canadians in particular looked very flat.
  • Milan Lucic keeps looking better and better with each passing game. Physically he is already dominating out there. He reminds me of a young Eric Lindros in that regard. When his offensive game catches up he will be a very good player for years to come. Another draft miss by the Canucks. He's a hometown guy and the fact he was playing right here with the Giants makes that draft day gaffe all the more tough to swallow. FYI- We ended up taking Michael Grabner in the 1st round that day. A one trick pony who's languishing in the minors.
  • Speculation for tonights game between the Sens and Pens has the Senators activating an injured Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza into tonights game. This is either an act of desperation or a bluff move by Bryan Murray. If they do end up playing I'm not sure if it will be helping or hurting the team more but it is apparent that Murray is slowly running out of options to help the team against the dominant Pens. One move they could make is to take goalie Martin Gerber out for Ray Emery. I know Gerber has been solid but don't forget that Emery is the guy that backstopped them to the finals last year... this team has rallied behind him before. He is streaky as they come but if you get him on the right roll he does have the ability to steal games. Also don't forget this guy loves the spotlight more than anyone as well and this move would put him right under the microscope.
  • ...and finally before I finish have a look here to see the Cory Sarich crunch on Marleau. Just a spectacular hit http://youtube.com/watch?v=J2rvOQHSXKU

Canucks Report 14/04/08

Reports today have the Canucks winning the Fabian Brunnstrom sweepstakes and getting the talented swede to sign on a three year entry level contract. With a promise of top 6 minutes and a likely chance to play with the Sedins, Brunnstrom turned down several other teams with Detroit and Toronto among them. Fabian has NHL size and great speed and has been deemed by many as the best player not in the NHL. In past years that tag has been applied to such players as Peter Forsberg, Tuomo Rutuu, and Kristian Huselius.

It's good to see Dave Nonis get a jump on things early on. A lot of people have been calling for his head and he has made his share of gaffes but this off season is the first he's had quality cap dollars to play with. At the very least I think Nonis should get one last make or break season to turn this team around. Back to todays headline though, one of the best things I like about the Brunnstrom signing was the fact that Detroit was hard after them. GM Ken Holland and his scouting staff have been a great finder of talent particularly of the European variety and the fact that they were enamored with Brunnstrom is all you need to know about how much potential this kid has.

Ben Kuzma has more here on the Brunnstrom signing.

Same Ol'Bert

Well I guess it doesn't really matter what team you go to Bert you're just going to end up with the same results. Tonights loss by the Ducks to the Dallas stars to fall 2-0 in the series had your classic Bertuzzi performance. He scowled, he brooded, he sneered and he argued with the refs. He made good hits, had a few good chances, was a presence around the net. He even set up a pretty goal to tie up the game. But in the end of the night we'll be remembering him for taking a stupid penalty that led to a backbreaking power play goal and of course the 2nd of his penalties that took the Ducks off a crucial powerplay with a good amount of time left in the 3rd.... like I said classic Bert.

We sure miss you in Vancouver!

Maxim... A Sabre no more?

Maxim Afinogenov was a great candidate I missed on my top 5 players to move list. Reason one for his candidacy, quite simply he had a terrible year. Reason two? Well his general manager is now all but saying he's a goner.

Being a Vancouver Canucks fan it is required of me to speculate on every available player to come here and I say why not Maxim dammit? In terms of puckhandling and skating ability he's the closest thing I've seen to a Pavel Bure who I dearly miss...especially in these offensively deprived times in Canuckville.

Here's a good article on the Maxim situation.

Playoffs News & Notes 12/04/08

  • Alex the Great makes his playoff debut in style netting the game winner in a wild 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Ovechkin was held in check for most of the game but scored when it mattered the most after stripping the puck from a dazed and confused Lasse Kukkonen. Don't you just love watching this guy score? The passion he plays with is unmatched by any other player going in todays NHL. What a great time to be a Caps fan right now.
  • Patrick Sorenson received good news today as he found out he will not need surgery to remove a testicle after taking that slapshot to the groin. Talk about taking one for the team.
  • Mark Recchi joins the panel on TSN. Now is it just me or does he not have the appearance of a pro athlete who has just finished an NHL season? I know hes a stocky guy but the double chin action combined with the combover has him looking like a guy who is already well into his retirement years. Despite his portly appearance and age I think you may find him coming back next year. He had a pretty good second half run with the Atlanta Thrashers.
  • You can almost hear the noose tightening on the Ottawa Senators. I think the Sens will take one game against the Pens at home but look for this series to be done in no later then 5. Evgeni Malkin and Sydney Crosby combined for 7 points last night and you're laughing if you have either in your playoff pool.
  • Currently 3-2 in Detroit right now over the Predators. Preds have yet to ever win a playoff game away from home and I doubt that will change after today. **UPDATE 4-2 win for Detroit.

A Look Ahead: 5 candidates to move

While we are now full steam ahead into the playoffs I say it's never to late to look at the upcoming offseason. With that I bring you 5 candidates to get moved this summer.

1. Mike Cammalleri GP 63 G 19 A 28 P 47

Mike suffered through an injury riddled up and down year with the Kings. A year that had started with him winning a controversial 2 yr 6.7 million dollar arbitration deal that at one point looked like the Kings were going to walk away from. There's no denying his talent but as of right now the Kings are well stocked with scoring forwards especially with Patty O'Sullivan coming on this year. Cammi might be a candidate to get moved in exchange for much needed defensive help.

2. Joni Pitkanen GP 63 G 8 A 18 P 26

The Oilers gave up a lot to acquire Pitkanen last year in hopes they were getting a real anchor to build around. What they got was an inconsistent player who was constantly in and out of the lineup whether it was from the flu or a variety of other small ailments. With Tom Gilbert signed to a new 6 year deal I'd say Joni's days could be numbered here. Pitkanen is a RFA but his rights could be moved in a similiar deal to the Hartnell trade to Philly. Only a sudden retirement by Sheldon Souray may save his job in Edmonton.

3. Jaromir Jagr GP 82 G 25 A 46 P 71

By Jagr's lofty standards this year was a poor one for him. With the exodus of his regular centerman in Mikael Nylander, Big Jags was unable to create any type of chemistry with big tickets FA's Scott Gomez or Chris Drury. Some experts might tell you that at age 36 Jagr is simply entering the downphase of his career. Add to that the late season speculation that he was in talks with Omsk of the russian league to join them next year. When asked about it Jagr went on the defensive with him being quoted as saying "maybe they don't want me around here". In any case I highly doubt I'll see Jags leave the NHL high life for riding buses in Russia, but we may also not see in Ranger blue as well.

4. Patrick Marleau GP 78 G 19 A 29 P 48

Now with Patty being a UFA this year this might be too obvious a pick to be on this list but I think he's noteworthy since he's been such a staple for the San Jose Sharks. Drafted 2nd overall in 1997 he's been with the team for a long time now, he's their captain and up till the acquisition of Joe Thornton was the team's undisputed franchise player. His 48 pt season was a huge disappointment for a player of his stature so look for the team to save on the cap room and let him go. I doubt even a quality playoff performance can save him now.

5. Mattias Ohlund G P 53 G 9 A 15 P 24

Now this choice to you might be from out of left field to you but with the Vancouver Canucks missing the playoffs and desperate for some punch up front I surmise that Ohlund could be the best trading chip they have. From what I witnessed this year (when Ohlund was in the lineup) his play seemed to regress a bit. I don't think it was enough though that it would be noticed league wide. His reputation as a solid D-man is still intact and he is fairly affordable in the whole scheme of things. Big ticket items in Willie Mitchell and Sami Salo are very likely to stay and with young defenders in Bieksa and Edler still developing Ohlund may be the one to go. A deal with the defence starved Kings perhaps? The aforementioned Mike Cammalleri could look very good in a Canucks uni.

Playoff News & Notes 11/04/08

"Oh where have all the ducks gone"?

The biggest shock of the evening came down at the Pond in Anaheim as the Dallas Stars came in and spanked the Ducks 4-0. Now being only game 1 it is way to early to write off the defending champs just yet but I think a game like this exposes a couple troubling aspects of the current Duck team... 3 areas in particular.
1. Goaltending- down the stretch JS Giguere had trouble staying healthy as back spasms kept flaring up on him. Now that we're in the playoffs and he'll be needed every second night in a series
I would be very concerned on how that's holding up for him. He looked shaky last night, particularly on that first squeaker through the legs. Don't be surprised if Jonas Hiller makes and appearance as he was excellent for the team when called upon.
2. Health- Corey Perry to be exact. You take any teams leading goal scorer out and it is going to sting. They say he'll be back in time for game 3 and you hope for their sake its not a rush job and that he will be effective. I'm also not totally convinced Ryan Getzlaf is going at full strength. He missed a handful of games with a tweaked shoulder and if you've ever had a shoulder injury you know it doesn't just go away overnight.
3. Depth- Lets have a look at the top 3 centers for the Stars... Mike Ribeiro, Brad Richards, and Mike Modano. Now lets see what we have for the Ducks Getzlaf ok... Pahlsson and Marchant ok good checking centers and then you have Ryan Carter centering the 2nd line... who? They miss Andy Mcdonald big time here, his speed, his passing, his rapport with Teemu. Doug Weight probably will draw back in the lineup but how effective he will be is anyones guess.

Hindsight is 20/20 but the Bertuzzi signing is looking worse then ever. Without his bloated salary on board they could of held onto Mcdonald who would be far more valuable to the team. You can lay the blame on either of 2 ways. One at Brian Burke for panicking so quickly when he was unsure whether Teemu would be back. Instead of throwing all that money towards a broken down Bert they could of easily stuck Bobby Ryan into the lineup for some invaluable experience and take the risk that Teemu would be back once he got the proper rest after a long hard run the previous year. Or you could lay the blame directly at Teemu and Scott Niedermeyer for putting the team in that precarious position by humming and hawing towards their decision to finally returning. They could of saved the team and their fans a lot of grief if they had just decided earlier that hey we need a half year off but we'll be back recharged for the final run. Anyways we'll see how this team does back in Game 2. Pride and experience says they will bounce back but the Dallas Stars may shut the door on that notion.

NHL Playoffs News & Notes 04/10/08

Well yesterday I had a picture of Evgeni Nabokov getting beat but for tonight I had to even it up with a pic of him making a great save. He was simply sensational in game two versus the Flames earning the shutout in 2-0 win. This was no cheesy shutout, several highlight reel saves were made highlighted by an absolute robbery on Owen Nolan late in the 3rd to keep the game at 2-0. Kipprusoff was no slouch either making several great stops particularily an array of shots from Joe Pavelski who had a great game and finally beat the Kipper with what turned out to be the game winner. It is looking more and more like this series will be determined by goaltending more than anything else.

A lot of people have the Sharks heavily favoured but the two teams are more alike then you think. Check out the comparisons... one true superstar forward (Iggy/Big Joe), anchor dman (Campbell/Phaneuf), streaky flake (Cheechoo/Tanguay), veteran scorer (Marleau/Langkow) and they both even have their own old warhorse still hanging around (Roenick/Nolan). I still like the Sharks to win this in the end but it is clear this could go either way. Bottom line it's Kipper or Nabby... take your pick. I'll be back tomorrow morning to discuss the surprise of the night... the Stars rout over the not so mighty Ducks.

NHL Playoffs News & Notes 04/10/08

  • Well with the NHL action starting I rushed home in time to absorb as much of the action possible starting with Pittsburgh Ottawa. You're seeing a superstar in full bloom with Evgeni Malkin, he was simply dominating out there. If Crosbys game starts coming around its going to get ugly. MIA Spezza and Heatley... continuing their no-show from last years finals.
  • Upset of the night the Flames over the Sharks. While the Sharks controlled much of the play Mikka Kirprusoff stole the show. You can't blame that one on Joe Thornton but the critics are already egging on him especially with the Flames superstar Iginla having a great game.
  • Game of the night had to be Minnesota vs Colorado. What didn't this game have? End to end action, huge hits, shots off the post, a late game penalty shot, and of course the OT goal by none other then Burnaby Joe. The guy is simply money... I honestly didn't notice him much out there for most of the game but look at the scoresheet and hes right there with a goal and assist. I predict this series to go the full 7 games but whoever comes out of it will be beaten to a pulp.
  • In glorious 42"HDTV Don Cherrys suits are more ghastly then ever. My eyes were literally bugging out at the sight of that orange monstrosity he was wearing. It looked like someone ran over garfield and peeled him onto a suit....Yuck.
  • Last but not least I just want to mention how Craig Simpson is slowly rising as one of the games top color commentators. With Harry Neale long gone and listening to the sneering arrogance of Greg Millen, the overexuberence of Pierre Mcguire, and the cluelessness of John Garrett over the years it is refreshing to hear the voice of Simpson. He breaks each play down with great insight without sounding like a know it all. Having been a former forward hes been through a lot of the situations he describes. I'm not sure why we've deemed all these ex-goalies as the top color analysts of the game. They've made a living stopping a frozen black puck. I don't think they are too closely tied to offensive and defensive strategizing like a former forward, dman, or coach would have been.

NHL Playoffs begin!

Here we are at that time of year again! What better way to start off my blog then with the first night of NHL hockey playoff action. Millions of people now are gearing up for their office pools, I may be a bit late to offer advice but for those starting late I will offer my top 10 sure fire picks plus my top ten sleepers.

Top 10 no-brainers

1. Evgeni Malkin- Pens are one of the top teams in the east and this is the beast who's been leading them. At the very least you'll get a ton of points from him against Ottawa (gerber? yikes)
2. Sidney Crosby- Could easily be no.1 here. Recent ankle injury might scare some.
3. Joe Thornton- The west is tough but many are picking the Sharks to be the team to beat. If thats the case then Jumbo Joe is the guy you want.
4. Pavol Datsyuk- Detroit's a powerhouse and this guy has been hot for them all year.
5. Henrik Zetterberg- see above.
6.Alexei Kovalov- Montreal is the toast of Canada this year and Kovy is their feared sniper.
7. Marian Hossa- Not a great track record in the playoffs but hes never been on a offensive machine quite like the Pens before.
8. Ryan Getzlaf- The pick you want if you think the Ducks will repeat. He was a monster last year.
9. Alexander Ovechkin- Even if the Caps only go a couple rounds he'll most likely end up in the top 10 scorers.
10. Nicklas Lidstrom- One of the most reliable players you could ever draft. Like residual income hes always paying out.

TOP 10 Sleepers

1. Corey Perry- This guys is falling was down a lot of drafts because of his injury status but if you've done your homework you know hes coming back soon.
2. Pascal Dupuis- Who you ask? Word is he may be lining up with Crosby and Hossa. If thats the case he may turn out to be late round gold.
3. Johan Franzen- Was on a tear to end the year. Will likely line up with Zetterberg or Dats.
4. Tomas Holmstrom- Always a resident on playoff sleeper lists and for good reason too.
5. Chris Kunitz- Not the big name but a fiesty competitor and is starting on a line with Selanne and Getlaf.
6. Serge Kostitsyn- The lesser know of the Kostitsyn brothers. With Koivu and Ryder out to start he'll be given quality ice time on a scoring line.
7. Wojtek Wolski- Lots of big name avs will be around but this may be a guy who slips. Plays with Sakic.
8. Zach Parise- The Devils are a boring team but they always do well this time of year. Parise's the best of the bunch. Was great in last years playoffs.
9. Jonathan Cheechoo- Had a horrible year but if he gets on one of his hot streaks then you'll be laughing.
10. Jordan Staal- Can you tell I like the pens? Breaking out for the playoffs might make up for a dreadful sophmore season.
